Weight Loss Surgery

Many individuals have worked for years to try to lose weight but have been unsuccessful. After a plethora of different diets and exercise programs, they have not been able to shed a pound. Some of these people will give up and simply accept their weight, while others will choose to have weight loss surgery. Many people automatically assume that weight loss surgery is for those who are too lazy to put the effort into losing weight. While this is certainly true for some people who get weight loss surgery, many people overlook the individuals that simply cannot seem to lose any weight. For those that just cannot lose weight, I can understand the desire for weight loss surgery. If I had spent years dieting and exercising with no results to show for it, I would probably consider weight loss surgery too.

However, people who simply do not want to put in the effort to lose weight in a natural way should not be allowed to have weight loss surgery. I think a qualifying factor for weight loss surgery should be proof that they have tried to lose weight already. In any surgery, there is a significant risk and people should not undergo that risk if there is a safer alternative. Not wanting to try is not enough of a reason to forego the safer alternative. Yet weight loss surgery continues to be commonplace for lazy and overweight individuals. To me, this seems like another indication of what has become of our society. After fast food chains pop up on every corner and half of the population is overweight, we collectively want to take the easy way out with weight loss surgery.
